Cooperatives owned by their members

Cooperatives governed democratically by their members and consistent with the seven international cooperative principles.

02

Cooperative associations

Associations whose members are cooperatives.

03

Prepare your evidence

What you’ll need.

Prepare the evidence for your organization’s category. Established cooperatives can use one of the alternative evidence routes below.

An established cooperative

  • Evidence of membership in a cooperative apex body, or
  • Bylaws showing democratic member ownership, or
  • Local incorporation filings establishing cooperative status.

A cooperative being formed

  • Draft governance documents.
  • Cooperative incorporation papers submitted to the local authority.
  • Progress updates every six months while formation continues.

A cooperative association

  • Documents explaining the association’s purpose.
  • A reference from a member cooperative.

An organization controlled by a cooperative

  • Evidence of the ownership structure.
  • Confirmation from a cooperative shown in that structure.

An organization serving cooperatives

  • Examples of work with cooperatives.
  • A cooperative reference explaining the benefit to the movement.
Keep your registrant email active.

The registry requests evidence after registration, with an initial response window of two days. An unresolved request carries a further period of 30 days; unanswered requests can suspend the domain’s DNS.

Can any business register a .coop domain?

No. The registrant must be an organization that meets a registry eligibility category. A domain being available does not establish the organization’s eligibility.

Do we need every document listed?

Use the evidence for your organization’s category. Established cooperatives have alternative evidence routes; other categories require the supporting documents and references described above. The registry may request more information.

Who decides whether we qualify?

The .coop registry decides eligibility. SDH can help you understand the steps; approval remains with the registry.

Is .coop part of the free Shared Hosting domain offer?

No. New clients choosing hosting for 12, 24 or 36 months can receive an included initial .com registration or eligible transfer. A .coop registration is priced separately.

Can we use .coop for a website and email?

Yes. You can use your .coop domain for a website and email addresses. Hosting and email services are separate from domain registration; SDH can help you choose a suitable package.
